Burger King’s New Mexican Chicken Sandwich Isn’t Mexican Enough

A novel Mexican interpretation of the Original Chicken Sandwich will debut at Burger King next year; nevertheless, some consumers have already noted that the new menu item scarcely resembles traditional Mexican cuisine. Have we noted that Burger King has not yet officially revealed the new sandwich?

In recent years, it has become increasingly typical for major fast-food promotions to be disclosed on social media prior of their official announcement by brands. This seems to have occurred once more on the Burger King subreddit r/BurgerKing. Approximately six days ago, a member initiated a discussion titled “Shush don’t tell anyone, ok? 🤫,” seemingly revealing an internal marketing brochure for a new Mexican Original Chicken Sandwich.

Although anonymous social media posts may lack reliability as news sources, The Fast Food Post confirms that the Mexican Original Chicken Sandwich will be introduced at participating BK restaurants nationally in January 2023.

G. Ramsay of FFP contacted their local Burger King on the enigmatic new menu item, and the establishment confirmed that the sandwich is forthcoming, with an anticipated price of approximately $5.99. However, the eatery was unable or unable to specify a precise date for the sandwich’s arrival.

What are the specific components and ingredients of the sandwich? The new Mexican Original Chicken Sandwich will consist of delicately breaded chicken breast, ghost pepper cheese, and crispy-fried jalapeños, all served on a sesame seed bun. It closely resembles BK’s recently launched Ghost Pepper Whopper, except lacking the orange bun and featuring chicken instead of beef.

Burger King has consistently embraced experimentation with bold flavors and unconventional menu items, and this recent creation evidently aims to enhance a BK classic. Regrettably, first internet responses to the Mexican Original Chicken Sandwich have been, at best, ambivalent.

What is the primary grievance? The sandwich lacks a distinctly Mexican character. In a separate Reddit thread in r/fastfood regarding the new sandwich, one user commented: “It doesn’t seem particularly ‘Mexican,’ unless one considers Taco Bell to be Mexican.”

A user inquired about enhancements to a sandwich to render it more Mexican, prompting one Redditor to suggest, “More jalapenos obviously,” while another provided a more elaborate response: “Queso Fresco, cilantro, onions, torta roll, Mexican sour cream, avocado, pico, etc., are examples of expected additions.” I do not assert that this would be practical for a fast-food burger franchise; rather, it is my immediate association when I encounter the term ‘Mexican chicken sandwich.’

Green chilies are another ingredient that many desire to include. A user inquired, “Are there no green chiles?” Simultaneously, another individual elaborated on that idea, stating: “Every McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger sold in New Mexico contains diced green chiles in lieu of pickles.” You would assume that BK would receive the message!

Ultimately, a Redditor wittily remarked: “Thus, American chicken sandwich.” Appears satisfactory.

In fairness to the origin of the Whopper, not all responses have been unfavorable. One user expressed their intention to sample the new sandwich, describing it as “bomb,” despite its lack of authentic Mexican characteristics. A further reader stated: “I genuinely appreciated the Ghost Pepper Whopper, so I will be sampling this!”

The original ‘Original Chicken Sandwich’ has been a fundamental component of Burger King’s menu for decades, initially launched in 1978. The traditional variant of the sandwich has delicately breaded chicken, fresh lettuce, mayonnaise, and an elongated sesame seed bun.
