As summer rapidly approaches, temperatures are set to rise significantly, prompting Wendy’s to intensify their menu offerings accordingly. Despite the fast-food chain’s existing selection of hot offerings, such as the hot Chicken Nuggets and Spicy Chicken Sandwich, it is now enhancing its menu with the introduction of an ultra-spicy pepper.
Beginning today, Wendy’s patrons can savor the newly introduced Ghost Pepper Ranch Chicken Sandwich, an updated iteration of the popular Ghost Pepper Fries, and the reintroduced Strawberry Frosty.
The ghost pepper possesses an extreme spiciness, measuring approximately one million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs) on the Scoville scale. A standard jalapeño pepper generally registers between 2,500 and 8,000 on the Scoville scale.
In creating these spicy menu offerings, Wendy’s aimed to satisfy the increasing consumer demand for spice while also delivering exceptional flavor. John Li, Vice President of Culinary Innovation at Wendy’s, stated that a well crafted ghost pepper meal allows one to experience the extreme heat together with “the fruitiness of a ghost pepper that is not present in many other peppers.”
The Ghost Pepper Ranch Chicken Sandwich features Wendy’s Spicy Chicken topped with ghost pepper-infused American cheese, ghost pepper-seasoned crispy onions, lettuce, tomato, and a creamy ghost pepper-infused ranch sauce.
Conversely, the recently introduced Ghost Pepper Fries will not resemble the iterations that customers have previously relished. Initially launched in 2015, the earlier iteration of Ghost Pepper Fries consisted of fries adorned with cheese sauce, sliced jalapeños, shredded cheddar cheese, and ghost pepper sauce.
The updated menu item has Wendy’s Hot & Crispy French Fries, which were redesigned in 2021 to maintain heat and crispness for an extended duration, and are coated in a spicy fry sauce.
This piquant sauce delivers a more robust flavor than merely applying dry seasonings to fries, as the spices are allowed to “bloom” and achieve their full flavor potential, according to Li.
We aimed to ensure accuracy by thoroughly testing all the dry seasonings. It is more convenient; nevertheless, it lacked quality, which is why we chose this approach to ensure we offer the flavor,” he stated.
Li stated that these fries possess significant spiciness, with a heat level rated at eight on a scale of one to ten. Individuals with heightened heat sensitivity may assign them a rating of nine, he noted.
The third and last item recently introduced at restaurants countrywide, which may alleviate the spiciness of the ghost pepper offerings, is the reintroduced Strawberry Frosty.
This sought-after item debuted in June 2022, and Li stated that the favorable customer response to the Strawberry Frosty during its initial release persuaded Wendy’s to consider a relaunch. They reintroduced it earlier in the year for this limited-time rollout to prolong customer access to the chilled treat.
The introduction of these three menu items today follows a significant Wendy’s launch in March, which featured the Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap, Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad, and Blueberry Pomegranate Lemonade. The business is providing a selection of meal discounts and distributing attractive freebies till mid-May during Mercury’s retrograde period.
